Rockwall and Heath were both founded in the 1800s. In 1851, while trying to dig water wells, settlers discovered an underground rock wall. People continue to discuss its origins to this day. Some believe that it is a man-made barrier defining territory; others believe that it is the result of weather sand dikes formed along the Balcones Fault line.

The community of Rockwall was established on April 17, 1854 and named after the mysterious discovery. Heath was named for John O’Heath, who in 1846 became one of the earliest settlers in the area. The community was originally known as Black Hill – a reference to the black soil in the area. Soon after, the city’s name was changed to Willow Springs after a local stream. Then in 1886, the city became known as Heath.

Both cities have steadily grown since their early beginnings. Rockwall has the distinction of being the smallest county in Texas. The larger Dallas Metroplex area is located only a short drive away. Even though it is known as the smallest county, there are a lot of cosmopolitan amenities available to its residents. Despite its continuing growth, both Rockwall and Heath strive to maintain the charm and sensibilities of a rural town.
